Day 18

Day 18, Day 9 smoke free

Well as suspected today was shite. Very hard day I woke up feeling fine infact got through half the day happy as larry. Then I noticed IT ...

I live in a quiet little apartment block and alot of people smoke in their individual units as I myself used to. This causes the hallways to house a bit of second hand smoke and smell. Im coping fine with that, I dont exactly hang out in the hallways all day long. Today there was something bothering, something niggling at my nose. I realised smoke from the halls had snaked its way into my living space. Only a tiny amount, not enough to bother a normal human being but my smell is so sensitive at the moment I could pick it. A huge cloud of doom came over me, almost like day 1 withdrawels of shaking and headaches. I actually did think of smoking today which has never crossed my mind before. Thankgod I threw away all my tobacco otherwise I would be back to square one. It was a bit of a kick in the guts considering Im 9 days off the smokes now but I got through it in the end. I wish I knew when thi would stop. Day 20, Day 50?

To make myself feel better I decided to make some home made prawn tempura. A nice little distraction with a treat at the end of it. It was yum and slowly the cloud lifted. Little blue pill popped and I start to relax again. I wondered how I can make good tempura where as every chinese takeaway in the vicinity of these lands manages to F it up .. interesting point!

Calming down as I write this blog. Thankgod for this blog!! I look forward to a good day tomorrow!!

Things I have noticed happening:
1. smell, I can smell the air freshener in my car for the first time ever. I thought it never worked!
2. my teeth feel cleaner

Moan over
Until next time, keep popping!

  1. Hi Zoe, well done for passing "the test" ;) That can't have been easy.
The tempura in Yamamori isn't bad - are you living in Dublin?
This weekend I achieved a big milestone - 2 late nights out on the beer, and didn't succumb to the temptation of smoking - I'm chuffed :D
Onto my 2nd pack of Champix tonight, time to go pop one! Have a good week

  2. Hi Zoe

    Couple of things:

1: This might not be helpful but I decided to conciously acknowledge the fact that I quite like the smell of smoke. Not in an Allen Carr 'oh my god I must smoke' way but in a more reasoned 'it didn't bother me then and it won't bother me now' kind of way. I've always said that if smoking had no implications I wouldn't give up so why should I suddenly hate the smell?

You are right though. One cig and you are back to day one. Don't do it.

2: How do you make that tempura?

  3. Welldone Pete, thats awsome! Im completely off the booze at the moment. I live in Mullingar so not alot of choice in terms of asian cuisine.

I know what you mean Tquit, I have no problem standing beside someone smoking or looking at them but for some reason it drove me crazy today!

My Tempura Recipe (stolen from someone somewhere!):

Makes batter for roughly 25 prawns .. it does make alot. All measurements are very rough but that doesnt matter.

    2 egg yolks
1 and 1/2 cups of water (must be cold or tempura will turn greasy)
1 and 3/4 cups of flour
    salt and pepper
    oil

    1. separate eggs to get egg yolks
    2. whisk
    3. start adding water, keeep whisking
    4. start adding flour, keep whisking

should go to an almost doughie like substance. Get your prawn and give them a good dip covering completly. Dont worry about lumps and bumps. Fry on both side for about a minute or until golden. Dry off and add sweet chilli sauce or anything of your liking. Even good on it own.

    Yum!

  4. Sounds fantastic. Thanks Zoe

Maybe that's the way to quit.. Cook good stuff and share recipes. That's got to be better than smoking.

    Cheers
